On October 22nd, 2014, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was identified as the victim who had been shot in a “terrorist attack” that took place at the War Memorial in Ottawa. This news shocked Canada and the whole world with the death of this soldier. With the passing of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, we will remember him and his family with many other veterans and active Canadian Forces members who take it upon themselves in keeping our country safe from harm.
With this event still fresh in our minds, we all should remember, Remembrance Day, 11 November, 2014 this month. Applebee’s® restaurants will once again say thank you to all Canadian Forces, veterans and active duty members, by giving them a special FREE meal from their Remembrance Day Menu. This tradition originated six years ago as a way to give back to those who give their all without expecting anything in return.
Since its commencement, the restaurant has served up nearly 10,000 free feasts to current and former associates of the Canadian Forces. These restaurants have become a gateway and gathering place where others can learn more about the experiences of these heroes and personally honour them.
All members of the Canadian Forces that bring proof of their service on 11 November 2014, are entitled to a free meal from the selection on the Applebee’s Remembrance Day Menu. They can provide proof in the form of a permanent ID card for permanent forces, temporary ID card for reserve forces and a photograph wearing uniform or a veteran’s card for veterans. To make things even simpler for these important heroes, they can also come dressed in their uniforms if they like as proof.
The Remembrance Day Menu includes a choice between their; 7 oz. House Steak, Chicken Fingers Platter, Double Crunch Shrimp, Fiesta Lime Chicken®, Oriental Chicken Salad, Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger and Three-Cheese Chicken Penne.
I was lucky to receive an invite from Applebee’s® to sample these meals in their Mississauga location. At first glance at their menu, I was impressed as they provide the guests with a wide variety of dishes. This is good as not everyone has the same tastes or likes the same thing, therefore this makes their menu that much more special.
The 7 oz House Steak was delicious and tender, it was very tasty and filling as it includes garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. As for the Chicken Finger Platter, it makes a wonderful meal that you can share with a partner or simply enjoy alone. Each finger is boneless and breaded, if that is not enough, it even includes fries, cole slaw and your choice of dipping sauce.
If you are a fan of seafood, then their Double Crunch Shrimp is perfect, as each golden fried shrimp is sure to be a pleasure to your taste buds. The Oriental Chicken Salad, is made with freshly picked greens tossed in an oriental vinaigrette, topped with tasty crisped noodles, toasted almonds and crispy chicken, is sure to provide a heavenly taste to all chicken lovers. While the Fiesta Lime Chicken, grilled chicken breast with zesty lime sauce, Mex-ranch and cheddar, served on crispy tortilla strips, with added seasoned rice plus fresh made Pico de Gallo will keep your taste buds entertained for a while.
Then my daughter’s favourite of all was the Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger served with chips on the side. We tried a bit of each of the meals, and I would definitely recommend all of them, the special heroes of Canada are definitely in for a treat.
However, if you are not part of the Canadian Forces do not let it stop you, make a turn at your nearest Applebee’s and get to know Canada’s heroes or thank them personally with their “Neighbours Thanking Neighbours” campaign that gives members of the public to leave their own special message online or on posters in the restaurants. This way you can let these special people know what their contribution and help means to you and that they are appreciated.
What a nice gesture towards those in the military! I actually don’t think I have ever eaten at Applebees before but their dishes look really tasty.
