Books are an essential part of life for any age especially our young ones, and nothing says a perfect night like curling up in bed and reading your daughter or son a good bedtime story and with the Christmas season fast approaching, it’s time to decide what to buy your child for Christmas and what’s a better present than a set of three Christmas themed children’s books.
When buying Children’s books, you have to look at whether the story is age appropriate? , is the book too short or too long for your child – will they have the attention span to sit through the story? , is the story entertaining and will the children relate to the book? And more importantly is the language right for where your child is at?
Here are three great children’s Christmas stories that I recommend every parent should keep in their child’s reading collection:
1) How Do Dinosaurs Say Merry Christmas? Written by Jane Yolen and Illustrated by Mark Teague – Join Jane Yolen and Mark Teague as they release another new book in the Dinosaurs Collection , this one teaches children all about Christmas time and the proper way to act around Christmas time. Like the other books in the Dinosaurs series where the group of Dinosaurs get into mischief, the Dinosaurs in How Do Dinosaurs say Merry Christmas? are no different with the child’s favourite dinosaurs ripping open their presents, knocking over their Christmas tree , emptying out their Christmas stockings all over the floor and then after all the ruckus they cause, their tummies start to rumble and the Dinosaurs end up eating all of Santa’s cookies and Candy Canes. Then like Jane Yolen and Mark Teague’s previous books in the serious, the second half shows the children how they should behave at Christmas time with the singing of Jingle Bells , they sleeping nicely so that Santa can come down the Chimney and put the presents under the tree. The book is perfect for those children ages 3-7yrs and with bright colourful and interactive illustrations, your child won’t want to put down the book and you may find yourself having to purchase the rest of the Dinosaur series as they become hooked.
2) How Do Dinosaurs say Happy Chanukah? – Written by Jane Yolen and Illustrated by Mark Teague – This Christmas you can not only teach your child about the “Christmas traditions” of most cultures with How Do Dinosaurs say Merry Christmas? , but with its reading counterpart, you can teach your child all about the Jewish traditions of Chanukah by reading them “How do Dinosaurs say Happy Chanukah? With Mark Teague’s amazing illustrations, your child can go through and learn about the Eight days of Hanukkah with a wonderful repetitive rhyme throughout the book which is great for little children as they find it easier to learn when something is repeated to them and having the repetitive verse can also encourage your child to join in with the reading of the story. In How Do Dinosaurs say Happy Chanukah? The rhyme is “Does he peek at the presents stashed under Dad’s bed? Does he write his own name on each gift card instead? What I found great about this Dinosaur book was that it focused on the different aspects of Chanukah from playing dreidel to lightning candles and sharing gelt. Again the Dinosaurs series are perfect for children aged between 3- 7 years old.
3) Finding Christmas – Written by Robert Munsch – When people hear the name Robert Munsch, it is synonymous with producing great children’s stories and has been for decades. What’s really great for us is that he is a lot closer to home being one of Canada’s best loved children’s authors. This Christmas Robert and his illustrating pal Michael Martchenko have paired up again to bring you a great tale for Christmas titled “Finding Christmas”. Finding Christmas is a tale that we all can relate to as we are all guilty of going on a treasure hunt to find out where our parents have stashed our Christmas presents and the main character Julie is no different as every year she finds the presents all over the house , but this year she has found NONE , NADA. Julie is worried, has Christmas been cancelled? Finding Christmas is great to read with the children and as I read it with my daughter, having great illustrations meant that she pointed to the different items in the book. The language is simple and childlike which makes reading out loud perfect and is great not only for children but everyone who has ever read a Robert Munsch book will appreciate “Finding Christmas’ , to conclude I say that Finding Christmas is another of Robert Muncsh’s books that have found its way into the hearts of children and parents alike.
So this Christmas, parents if you are looking for the perfect trio of books to share with your children – then look no further and check out these three tales found in the Scholastic website at http://scholastic.ca.
