One thing that has made the transition to eating a heart healthy diet easier is the American Heart Association Heart – Check Food Certification Program.
The Heart-Check mark means the food product meets their nutrition requirements. This makes shopping for heart healthy foods so much easier. All I have to do is look for the red heart with a white check mark on the package and the name of the American Heart Association on the top, and know they certify it. Be careful because not all red hearts are from the American Heart Association; so you need to look for the AHA name too. On their website, they have a list of products that meet their requirements – here’s a link to it: http://checkmark.heart.org/ProductsByCategory.
Last week I talked about having to make a lot of foods myself now and one of them is breakfast foods, like waffles. I make a whole batch of them and then freeze them. The waffles re-heat nicely in the toaster.
Since I’ve been talking about foods that have the heart check mark on them, I wanted to share a chocolate chips waffle recipe with you, made using Heart Smart Bisquick.
You only need 6 ingredients to make this yummy recipe.
You measure 2 cups of Heart Smart Bisquick and put it in a mixing bowl.
Now, you add in all the liquid ingredients. As you can see from the picture with the milk, it’s o.k. to be messy as you go. I will clean it all up when I’m done.
The last thing you add is ½ cup of miniature semisweet chocolate chips. The dr. said some sugar is o.k., just don’t overdo it. After all, I do have 3 kids and it helps to let them have a little bit of a sweet taste sometimes, so they don’t miss it so much that they pig out at a friend’s house.
Now that all the ingredients are mixed in, you’re ready to cook the waffles.
I always spray the waffle maker with cooking spray before I make the waffles, so they’re easier to take out. I find that I have to re-spray after every 2 batches.
Using a silicone spatula, I spread the batter over the entire waffle maker.
Once the light clicks off and the steaming has stopped, the waffle is ready to be cooled on a wire rack.
Once cooled, I place the waffles in a freezer bag, separated by a paper towel. Then we just take out how many waffles we need in the morning, pop them in the toaster, and they’re ready to eat!
- 2 cups Heart Smart Bisquick
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 1/3 cups nonfat milk
- 1 egg white
- ½ cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
- Heat waffle iron. You may have to coat it with cooking spray.
- In medium bowl, mix all waffle ingredients except chocolate chips with wire whisk until blended. Stir in chocolate chips.
- For each waffle, pour batter onto center of hot waffle iron. (Check manufacturer’s directions for recommended amount of batter).
- Close lid of waffle iron.
- Bake 3 to 5 minutes or until steaming stops.
- Carefully remove waffle.
Thanks for the recipe I have to did out my waffle iron to try 🙂
Cheryl, you’re welcome. I hope you enjoy it.
