When it comes to common, non-serious illnesses, I personally do not want my family to be too dependent on drug medication. Being a Natural Mama that I am, I believe in the power of the human body’s ability to heal naturally, whether by itself or with the help of natural remedy. But don’t get me wrong, I am not totally rejecting the idea of using prescription drugs and medical procedures for treatment. It’s just that I would like to have as minimal to zero intervention of foreign and synthetic substances in my body as possible, not only when it comes to medication, but also with digesting any kind of food. We as a family have been doing great so far with this kind of natural lifestyle.
So how far would I go in taking natural approaches? Let’s take common colds for example. Here’s a quick rundown on how we normally deal with it:
- Number one, of course, is prevention. We take vitamins regularly. But when we sense that we’re about to catch a cold due to the season or for some other reason, we increase Vitamin C intake at a safe level. If I take my vitamins in the morning, I take a standalone Vitamin C supplement in the evening.
- We increase our fluid intake, especially water, and avoid sugary foods for a while.
- I prepare hot comfort food such as chicken noodle soup, or simple gingery porridge, as well as warm lemonade for added citrus goodness.
- We take lots of rest and sleep to recharge our immune system.
- For uncomfortable symptoms like clogged nose, we use saline drops and nasal aspirator for the little one. For grownups and our big kid, we manually expel by blowing our runny noses.
- We gargle with the trusty old salt and warm water to relieve sore throat.
- We (the adults) take in a spoonful of apple cider vinegar.
- We also use external remedy like vapor rub, air humidifier, and fever patch.
- Most of the time, we feel better at the end of day two with just the above methods. But if the cold doesn’t seem to get better after more than three days, we consult our doctor. This is when we suspect that it’s not viral, but a bacterial infection.
I know it’s easier and much more tempting to take over-the-counter meds right away but my heart can’t just let it. After all, there is no strong evidence which proves the effectivity of cold and cough medicines in children. And I’ve seen the advantage of not succumbing to drug medication. We become more aware and in control of our own bodies, and my kids maintain a positive attitude even at times when they don’t feel well. And we don’t experience side effects from medicines!
I wish my family had all the resources to go for home remedy in all other common illnesses and pains that we encounter, but for my kids it would be trickier. You have to be careful with the preparation and dosage, and sometimes the taste of anything could be an issue. That’s why I’m glad to have chanced upon reviewing Kids 0-9 homeopathic medicines, a line of homeopathic medicines for kids aged 0 (newborns) to 9, by Homeocan. This is just great for back-to-school period and the coming winter!
There are currently 12 homeopathic oral medicines and 2 external-use creams from Kids 0-9, including Cough & Cold Syrup and Cough & Cold Nighttime Formula Syrup. These homeopathic medicines are produced with strict compliance to Health Canada standards, using GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) to ensure high quality and great effectivity. The ingredients, which are listed in every Kids 0-9 variant, are prepared under conditions strictly defined by HPUS (Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States).
Should you try homeopathic medicines for yourself or your kids, there’s definitely no harm! Just be sure to follow the administering instructions, and observe how your child’s condition is responding to the treatment. Remember that homeopathic remedy is not meant for use in serious illnesses, and does not intend to completely replace conventional drug medication without consulting a physician. Good luck!
