LEGO…Build Your Imagi-Nation

I cannot remember when LEGOs weren’t a staple in the lives of children. LEGO is synonymous with joy, fun, and children’s laughter. I know that’s the case in my home. A favorite of my two currently is the LEGO Creative Building Set.

LEGO Creative Building Set

Comprised of 570+ building bricks in a variety of 41 bright, happy colors, this set is a wonderful way of opening the doors to their imaginations and allowing their minds to reach limitless heights. When they turn the LEGO storage box over and empty its contents onto the floor or a table, they don’t always have a plan in mind. Sometimes they just begin snapping the pieces together and let their imaginations run with whatever develops. Other times they use the instructions that accompanied the set. These include ideas for nine potential models, complete with building instructions. These can be found online as well. My children and I have built the house, the rollerblader, the car, the cassette player and the boat together.

Along with the more than 570 bricks included in this set are wheels, eyes, windows, and doors…everything they need to build a town, a “monster” truck, an animal, or even a family of LEGO people! I love that my children can build anything they see around them, as well as anything only they can see in their own mind. Sometimes, while they’re putting together something they’ve carefully planned to build, the idea takes a completely different shape as it flows from their imaginations into the actual creation. Their faces light up as they watch their brainstorm take on a physical form. The word “wrong” does not exist in LEGO language. What a child may think doesn’t look anything like the idea he or she started out to build could turn out to be their biggest LEGO accomplishment!

LEGOS sets are very affordably priced. They are available from a great number of sources, not the least convenient of which is online. The LEGO Creative Building Set that I have for my children retailed at $29.99, a great price for the hours of fun and creativity contained inside that box. There are smaller sets, too. as well as larger sets, and you can shop for the perfect set by grade level or by age. LEGO also manufactures educational products, although, my opinion as a mom who loves to see her children learn while having fun, is that every LEGO set contains the potential to teach children while they play.

There is a LEGO set for every age. The age group targeted on the set I got for my little ones is “4-99”, and this couldn’t be more true! I so enjoy those too few-and-far-between opportunities when I am able to join my kids in letting my imagination go wild right along with them as we build a tropical island, or a cruise ship together (my imagination tends to run to a different level than theirs!). But, hey, with LEGOS nothing is impossible, right? Even a mom’s fondest dreams…

A child’s mind is an exciting place. There’s lots of room inside for both fun and learning. I believe that LEGO has been able through their products to create a lasting desire to learn in children while sprinkling it with fun.
