You know how every generation is supposed to look at the next generation and be completely confused by the music they like? Well, I have a little secret: that isn’t the case with me. My daughter is a total One Direction fangirl and I completely understand—because I am a bit of one myself.
What? Their music is catchy. And they are pretty cute.
Despite my love of One Direction, I couldn’t help but be a bit skeptical about their make-up line. I mean, first of all, it is designed with the input of a bunch of young men. While I am sure they wear their fair share of stage make-up, how much do they really know about what women are looking for in a cosmetic line? Second of all, it is geared towards ladies a bit younger than myself. While I am not one foot in the ground, I was still worried that I might not be able to pull it off.
The One Direction make-up line consists of three different tins that contain all of the items you need to pull together a complete look. Each tin is named after one of their hit albums and the make-up inside each is designed to reflect the energy of that particular album. I personally received the Take Me Home tin.
First thing I have to say is that the tin is pretty cute. It even comes with items to let you personalize it. While the make-up is off limits for now, my daughter couldn’t wait to get her hands on the tin. In fact, she has already stashed it in her backpack so she can use it to store trinkets at school.
The make-up itself is actually quite nice—nicer than what you have likely come to expect from celebrity make-up lines. The quality of the formula is excellent and everything applies quite well; the shadows blend easily, the mascara doesn’t leave clumps, and the lip stick has a good deal of staying power. All of the basic items—the mascara, eye shadow, nude lip color, and eye crayon—are incredibly versatile. They pair well with the majority of my outfits and mix easily with the cosmetics I regularly wear. Overall, the kit calmed my skepticism and exceeded my expectations.
However, there were two items in the kit that played into what I had expected: the glow gloss, which glows yellow under UV lights, and the gold glitter nail varnish. Both were high quality, and I have to admit that the glow gloss would have been something I couldn’t have resisted in younger days, but neither of them really fit into how I see myself right now—though the gold glitter might get taken out for a spin on my next date night. However, they are bold, kicky, and perfect for the audience they are targeting with this line
If you have a teen or tween who can’t get enough of One Direction, I highly recommend checking out their new make-up line. Even if make-up is restricted to dress-up time at home, it will certainly get your little fan excited. And be certain to invest in a UV light for that lip gloss!
