When I found out I was pregnant with my oldest, one of the first things I started to worry about was baby proofing the home. Surveying my then childfree abode revealed that there was so much work I needed to do. There were sharp corners, breakable décor, unsecured shelves, free access to the stairs, and plenty of uncovered electrical outlets. All of these problems needed to be addressed – and, for my peace of mind, I wanted them addressed before my daughter was born.
My husband and I spent a few weekends here and there throughout my pregnancy getting everything ready. We put bumpers on the corners of the coffee table, moved fragile items to safer locations, anchored our shelves to the walls, gated the stairs, and put plastic protectors into all unused outlets in the house. Our little world was safe for our daughter.
We brought her into this home designed to keep her safe and watched her grow. She began to crawl, walk, and explore her surroundings. My husband and I both felt incredibly secure in allowing her to freely do so – after all, we had made certain everything was safe.
Then, one day, she came walking over to me with something in her hand. I looked at it and found one of the plastic outlet covers we had placed to protect her. Powered by toddler curiosity, she had figured out how to get it off, leaving her at risk of electric shock.
The problem, at that time, was that there was no alternative product to protect her. We became more vigilant with her, which meant restricting her freedom around the home. This was stressful for us all, certainly not ideal. I spent time every so many weeks trying to find a better product.
Now, a better product is available – Guardian Angel Outlets. These outlets are designed to actively sense when a child is approaching the outlet and potentially putting him or herself in danger. When the outlet senses this, it shuts off the electricity, eliminating the danger to your child.
I don’t understand the technology behind it. All I know is that it works. I tested two outlets that were provided to me by the company as samples. As soon as they were installed, my toddler son was instantly curious about the new gadget on the wall. He approached, reached for the outlet, and the electricity turned off. As soon as he was away, the outlet sensed that everything was okay and turned the electricity back on.
The idea behind the product and which drives its parent company is that active safety is better than passive safety. The way we currently baby-proof is passive safety — we anticipate what could happen and place products which are designed to prevent the possible accident. Active safety products both anticipate the danger and react to it, minimizing or eliminating the possibility that a curious toddler will outsmart the device put in place to protect him or her.
