My 5 year old daughter received 4 of the scholastic summer picture books for review. She really enjoys looking at all the great pictures in each book.
One of the books is called King Pig; this book is about a king pig that is ruler of the sheep. The king pig tells the sheep to do what he wants them to do, whenever he wants them to do it. But he cannot get them to like him. I really like this book because it teaches my daughter to treat others how she would want to be treated. Plus the illustrations in this book are magnificent.
Another book my daughter has is called Night Light. This book is part guessing game, part counting book. It helps my daughter to learn her numbers and also learn to count and the guessing game is just plain fun and educational. This is not a book I would read to her as a bedtime story because she gets so excited about the guessing games. She really enjoys this book and I do not mind because she is also learning from it. The guessing game part of the book has also helped her memory because she remembers the answers to the guesses and knows what to say when I play the guessing game with her. It is really nice to watch her get so excited about reading, I love it.
The Three Little Pigs is the 3rd book my daughter owns. This book teaches my daughter to work together as a team and the outcome will better. This book also teachers her that if someone is in need it is always nice to help them. The author of this book put a twist on it where the big bad wolf is concerned. He still blows down the first two pigs’ houses, but they feed him chips and pop. Then the 2 pigs and the big bad wolf get to the third pigs house. The third pig fixes them all a healthy meal since the wolf cannot blow down his brick house. In the end she also learns about healthy eating habits.
My daughter also loves the book Zoë’s Room. She can relate to this because of her little brother. In the book Zoe finds out she will have to share her room with her little sister, but she considers herself a queen and her room is where she is queen of the universe. She does not want her little sister there because she will mess it all up! Until she finds out that little sisters are great in a storm!
Overall I would highly recommend these books to anyone with a preschooler. These teach great values and also help my daughter to learn to read. The illustrations are unforgettable and they keep my daughter wanting to read them more and more. My daughter gets so excited to read them that a lot of the time I have to read all three books just to get her to fall asleep at night. She is to the point now that she knows what is coming next in the books! I know that these 4 books are the ones I will be saving for my son when he gets older.

Hi, can i ask you something? You seem to know a lot about children books and illustrations. The thing is, I’m looking for children books with “scary” animal illustrations like the big bad wolf (or a fox) eating pigs (or seven kids or Red Riding hood or birds in Chicken Little) or being pictured with a fat stomach. Could be any other animal as well. I need it for my research. Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
