For years, it has been a consistent effort of my family to reduce wastes in and out of our household. And I believe, everyone else can do it too! Based on how we started this conscious effort, it all begun with proper waste segregation, and then eventually choosing to buy products with eco-friendly packaging, and always choosing reusable materials over disposables, until our trash bins hardly got used. We still find this practice quite challenging, but our zero-waste mindset as a family helped us keep up and improve, one day at a time.
And now, another great step we’ve done to reduce waste is by getting rid of disposable straws forever, plus making my kids extra-confident in drinking from glass!
We have the Siliskin glass cup for kids, which is packaged in twos, so there’s one for each of my kids. Each glass has 6oz capacity, and comes with a Siliskin which is a protective silicone sleeve that is shock-absorbing and easy for little hands to grip. What a brilliant idea! The Siliskin snugly fits the whole glass, but it leaves some space around the rim to make it comfortable for the kids to still sip with their lips touching the glass rim and not the silicone. The Siliskins have cute designs too, and it’s dishwasher-safe.
The Siliskin glass cup made my 3-year old boy more confident in drinking by himself, but he still isn’t adept in putting down the glass gently. And that’s perfectly fine now because the silicone sleeve takes care of the shock! And while my daughter’s already mastered drinking from glass, she now prefers drinking with the Siliskin because it really looks cute. But that’s no excuse for her not to put down the glass gently.
And at times when my kids feel too lazy to finish up a glass in one gulp, I would let them drink through a paper straw to make it easier for them to drink. Paper straws are recyclable and thus eco-friendly unlike plastic straws, but since we really want to reduce our wastes, the Silikids reusable silicone straw was a welcome replacement! It comes in a colourful six-pack of three different sizes to suit the height of the drinking glass or cup.
What I like about these genius Silikids silicone straws is that they’re not just fun to bite for soothing teething pain or just for the fun of it. They’re even better because they don’t get damaged! Unlike when my kids and I (when I was as young as them) enjoy biting plastic straws until they become deformed and too flat to be used again, or paper straws that get soggy and then tear apart, the Silikids silicone straws stay in shape.
For now, we’re happy to just clean the straws with running water and then quickly sterilize it. But we have our pipe brush ready in case my kids use these straws for sugary drinks, which is very rare in our household. We plan to bring some Silikids straws when we dine out, and I can’t wait! The next time we would buy a drink, which is also rare unless we crave slushies, we would request to not include the plastic straw. Small act, I know, but this earth-friendly effort goes a long way in motivating my kids to become responsible stewards of our planet.
Silicone is a more convenient alternative to plastic, as compared to stainless steel and glass because silicone is more lightweight. And all Silikids products are BPA-free and non-toxic, so there are no phthalates, PVC, lead, and other harmful chemicals. My kids are safe, and the earth is happier.
I have tons of silicone bakeware and try to buy that for my kids now that they’ve moved out.
